Middlesbrough - Middlesbrough Velodrome : Image credit Scott Akoz photography The 250m Middlesbrough outdoor velodrome cost £1.6M and was opened on May 8th 2016. Funding was from the local authority and British Cycling. The asphalt track is 7m wide and the bankings are angled at 34 degrees. The main contractor was Willmott Dixon and Tarmac laid the track. Tarmac installed 80mm binder to regulate the concrete and sub-base foundations and the track surfacing is 6mm UltiTrack, developed specifically for use on velodromes. UltiTrack is made up of fine granite which helps to give a smooth, durable low-friction finish. A polymer is added to the asphalt to reduce hot weather damage.

This video shows cleaning and maintenance of the velodrome.

The velodrome hires out track bikes and puts on taster sessions. The track is predominantly used by local riders and affiliated clubs to further track riding in the North East.

The velodrome is part of the £21M Middlesbrough Sports Village which has a 1 km tarmac road circuit, a skate park, athletics track, football pitches, a gym and sports hall.
